RUSPER MODEL RAILWAY CLUB
Jordans Carriage Sidings
As the name implies, Jordans Carriage Sidings is not a station and normal operation consists of empty stock movements to and from both Russ Hill and Prestwood Stations. The Russ Hill North operator would normally handle this traffic. However, our timetables have built in flexibility and we can operate Jordan’s as a terminus with a dedicated operator in charge.
The single line branch from Prestwood Station joins the double track branch from Russ Hill just before entering a fan of thirteen sidings. In addition, there are four short sidings for stabling diesel railcars and an auto coach train together with a large Motive Power Depot (MPD) with a turntable.
When a train arrives the tail lamp is removed, to be placed at the other end of the rake for the next move, and the engine uncoupled. Then the operator, with only one controller, must select a suitable engine from the MPD and back it on to the train in readiness for its next timetabled move. When a train departs the released engine is moved to the MPD for turning and is then available for future trains.
Operations here may seem to be limited and repetitive, but it is not an easy duty. Operational interest arises from the maintenance of a busy schedule and appropriate allocation of suitable motive power for the class or type of trains involved. To make operation a little less difficult verbal advice of incoming trains is given by Russ Hill. However, the bells between Jordan’s and Prestwood Station are still a necessity.
