Co-operation and communication between the two operators is an essential part of the operation here. Each has four controllers and with five separate sources of traffic, they are kept very busy. As an example, a shunting move from the ‘Up’ Relief to the ‘Down’ branch line involves crossing all lines, requires use of all four controllers and must be completed without disrupting passenger services! It is not uncommon to receive simultaneous “call attention” bell codes which adds to the pressure to keep services running to time.
